Hotel History

The Hotel first Opened in 1906 for those coming to Ripon to take the spa waters.  Ripon never succeeded, unlike its neighbour Harrogate, in becoming a well visited watering spa but The Hotel became popular with those wishing to explore the Yorkshire countryside.  For the last 100 years the hotel has been in the same family who lovingly care for the buildings continuing improvements with consideration of is historic interest.

Ripon itself has an interesting history going back to the Roman times.  In 672 the first cathedral church was consecrated - the crypt of which can still be visited under the present day cathedral which was begun in 1175.

The city was granted a charter in 886 and the world heritage centre of Fountains Abbey was founded in 1172.  For more information please see the Story of Ripon copies of which are kept at reception.
